Prototype 01 · 06 Sep 2026

For DKU students interested in learning technical art

One genre.
Many visual possibilities.

This prototype helps DKU students move from broad Steam genres to concrete games and promotional screenshots. The interface focuses on game categories and visual examples.

Figure 01

Genres in the current sample

Games can carry more than one genre, so totals overlap.

Figure 02

How genres overlap

Each cell counts games carrying both genre labels in the current sample.

Visual tags, when available

A descriptive proxy from Steam tags. Expert assessment and student interpretation require future validation.

Visual reference shelf

Inspect Style Examples from Your Chosen Genre

Showing all games in the prototype sample.

Supported claim

A gameplay genre can contain visibly different games.

The chart and screenshots support comparison within this small Steam-derived sample.

Prohibited inference

DKU student needs remain a hypothesis.

The current evidence supports description of this Steam-derived sample. Future community validation can establish how DKU students understand and use the categories.

Missing-data opportunity

Visual style remains an unverified proxy.

The supplementary HF source exposes a serialized Tags field. Steam says tags can describe visual properties, but developers, players and moderators can change them.

Data & governance

What this prototype actually does

  1. 01

Attempts to load the first public rows from HARISH20205/steam-games-dataset, whose Tags and Screenshots fields are serialized as text.

  2. 02

If that API is unavailable, uses a clearly labelled 12-game snapshot transcribed from the public FronkonGames dataset viewer.

  3. 03

Calculates genre counts and genre co-occurrence in the browser. Screenshot interpretation remains a future validation step.

  4. 04

Uses MobyGames Visual Presentation / Art Style as a linked reference with separately documented mappings.
